A Human Right? Detroit Cuts off Water to Thousands

February 15, 2016

About 18 months ago, when the city of Flint started pumping toxic water into homes and businesses, the city of Detroit—just 70 miles down the road—was beginning widespread water shutoffs to tens of thousands of households with delinquent accounts.

Maureen Taylor is state chair of the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization, where she advocates for the poor and helps them navigate Metropolitan Detroit agencies. She says that access to clean water should be a basic human right—a battle she’s lost in Detroit.

  1. As soon as the weather breaks, they’ll be thousands more. They still need water in Detroit! How anything Snyder did was ever legal is beyond me. I’m sure Koch’s had their very best ensuring laws were in place to allow it and many more have passed to hide them, their money, their emails, their cabal. Elections coming and the machines are rigged. Voter repression/oppression($) while purging of the voting base goes on ALL the time here. No one’s bothering to demand FAIR ELECTIONS and that is the Only way we will take our State back.

  2. An intriguing discussion is worth comment. I do believe that you
need to write more about this subject matter, it might not be a taboo
matter but usually people don’t speak about such topics.
    To the next! Best wishes!!
